A Summer-To-Fall Transitional Look To Try This September

September is, without a doubt, the trickiest month of the year for fashion. One day it’s warm, the next it’s freezing, and suddenly a simple wrap dress with sandals to run around town just isn’t going to cut it. There is nothing easy about dressing for the first month of Autumn because sometimes the Autumn weather is a bit late to the party. It’s a bit too early for your typical fall go-to’s, like a chunky knit and ripped jeans, but there are a few transitional pieces that you can move into your rotation. With that being said, if you’re trying to survive the seasonal transition period, I have a foolproof summer-to-fall transitional look to try this September, and it is one that I’ve been wearing on repeat. So to ease the awkward pass-off from August to September, I recommend looking for a lighter knit dress to show the Indian summer that it has met its match. A light knit, preferably without long sleeves, is an effortless layering base to help you feel comfortable in whatever weather decides to come your way while being seasonally appropriate.

I still love and look for neutral tones, that feels fresh and light, because the darker tones will have their moment this season, trust me, and this camel color will always be my favorite tone. Now that you have a good base because all works of art start with a good canvas let’s add what I call a fall-ish layering piece. This crisp white oxford is a bit on the heavier side and not like a thinner white linen or cotton button-down that is preferred during the warmer months, hence the fall-ish reference. A white Oxford shirt tied over a knit dress adds an extra element, a bit of contrast and something to keep you warmer on a breezy “autumn” day. Also, a crisp white button-down is one of those classic pieces that every woman should have in their wardrobe to style throughout the season. I love the exaggerated cuffs on this one, and I can’t wait to wear it tucked into a pair of light denim and boots as the temps cool off a bit more. You can style this look by leaving the shirt open and oversized like a boyfriend style silhouette and belt it at the waist with a chain belt for an extra element of fall 2019 fashion because chains are going to be everywhere this season. Or you can try to style it like my by tying it right at the waist and leaving the neck open, so the knit dress has a chance to show through at the neckline. I chose to style this look with dainty gold jewelry, tortoise sunglasses, and white sandals, but white mules, like these (which are on sale), would also be another great option this transitional look. It says: I want to be a part of fall, but I am still holding on to that little glimmer of summer that is left. Either way, you can’t go wrong with any way that you decide to style this outfit formula, and it is something that you most likely already have in your closet! I’ve rounded up some outfit inspiration below to help you get a jumpstart on the Indian summer season before fall hits up and fast!
