A Fresh Look At Hair Accessories

My love affair with hair accessories continues. It all started when I was a little girl, and it was always about finding the perfect hair scarf, barrette, bow or headband to complete any look. I remember my mother and grandmother would take me to the mall and help me pick out something to coordinate with my outfit. I have a vivid memory of wearing a light pink sweater set and wanting two clips to delicately pull back the front of my hair. Stacking two hair clips on top of one another was daring for me at the time, but I found two sparkling flowered pink barrettes that I clipped into my hair sight on scene. I loved them and still have those clips to this day. It is not only a reminder of my childhood but the power that a good hair accessory can have on a look. This season, brands are displaying a fresh look at hair accessories that we once adorned when we were younger, but with a modern twist. There are so many “grown-up” versions that can create polished, sophisticated, romantic, sweet and fun looks. The trick is to pair the right hair accessory with the correct hairstyle. I always love adding hair bows, ribbons, scarves, clips, and barrettes to a high or low ponytail, a classic messy bun, or a half-up style with loose waves. I find second-day hair to work best with hair clips, bows, and bands, as the hair is a little less slick and your accessory stays in place easier. I also rely on bobby pins as hidden “anchors” beneath hair accessories for extra hold. I used a very thin hair tie for more support, even though the hair scarf that I am wearing is attached to a hair tie. On my recent trip to Newport, Rhode Island, I was donning this Anthropologie hair scarf almost every day. This piece is a real showstopper with a simple pair of jean shorts and a white blouse, or even on the beach with a little white bikini.

Headbands are the one item I have always loved because they are an easy, low-lift way to jazz up even the simplest outfit. The headband started this major hair accessories moment because of their appearances on the S/S 19 runways, and all other hair accessories followed suit. From knotted to twisted headbands, simply embellished or pearly headbands, these accessories can add just the right about of glam, or really help to pull together a look. The knotted headbands have to be my favorite this season, with a slight beachy wave. Parted down the middle or a side part works great with any headband style, as well as leaving a few front pieces of hair out of the band for some face-framing tendrils.
